President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

Every September, for somewhere north of twenty years now, four couples — including Father Ron and his wife — have headed to the beach for a week together.

At some point, we landed on the perfect formula: four couples who travel well together, are happy when everyone joins an outing or dinner, and equally happy when only one couple does. No pressure. No itinerary. No hurt feelings.

For many years, we stayed free in the same three-story house at North Topsail Beach after becoming friends with the owner. In exchange, we handled minor repairs, tended the flower beds and, on occasion, prepared the house for an incoming hurricane before evacuating.

There is one small flaw in this otherwise wonderful tradition:

I hate the beach.

In more than twenty years, I can probably count on one hand the number of times my feet have touched the sand. My preferred beach activity is sitting on a covered deck, looking at the ocean from a respectable distance, where nature is visible but cannot get on me.

And because "Cigars, Bourbon & Benefactors" almost always follows a couple of weeks later, that deck becomes my unofficial CBB office. While everyone else vacations, I finish spreadsheets, signs, volunteer assignments and whatever else I have procrastinated on.

That is once again my plan this year.

Maybe that's why traditions last: not because everyone enjoys the same things, but because everyone is comfortable enjoying them differently.

Until I see you again, may something good happen because you were there.

Collections Continuing for Operation Warm 2026 - Opportunity to Buy Coats and Hoodies for Foster Kids

This is Denver/Lake Norman Rotary's eighth year working to provide a new winter coat for every child in foster care in Lincoln County. The club purchases coats that keep infants, children, teens and young adults (birth to 21 years) warm all winter. The recipients get to pick the color of the coat that they desire and their Social Worker provides the size for ordering and then, delivers the coat to the child.  Older children will receive hoodies since they much prefer them to actual coats.

The committee is headed up by Cathy Smiley and will raise money until the end of September so that orders can be placed with our various suppliers.

Please make checks out to the Denver/Lake Norman Rotary Club Foundation with "Operation Warm" on the memo line, so that your contribution can be tax deductible. Businesses, neighbors and friends are also welcomed and encouraged to donate.

Andie gave her for her anniversary with Jason again one more buck, 1 buck for baby watching for a new grandchild #2, 1 for Debbie who stole a pen from Curate’ a fav restaurant in Asheville.

Craig gave for his Mom who is out of the hospital still recovering, but at least out of the hospital, and for his nephew's wedding in RI - he flies KC-135 refueling jets for the Air Force -  probably returning to the middle east soon.
