I am looking forward to seeing everyone Wednesday morning on zoom. The board has decided to remain virtual through the end of February, with the hope to return to in person meetings on March 2nd with meals.

Denver/Lake Norman Rotary's Own Craig Buhrendorf Shares Photos From His Travels in South Africa
By Steve Baker
The Denver Lake Norman Rotary Club welcomed Craig Buhrendorf back to the Zoom podium on Wednesday, February 2nd. Craig and his wife Jeane enjoy traveling, taking photos of their experiences and sharing these with others. Craig has previously shared with us photos and narratives from their travels in Asia. We have all read articles in the press about other places in the world with accompanying photos, but having access to the original photographers and travelers was great.
The trip that Craig presented to us was a fabulous trip that Jeane and Craig took to South Africa. Their trip first took them to Cape Town. The photos were fantastic and he narrated each one sharing the location where it was taken. During this trip they were able to visit a cheetah refuge and pet one of the cheetahs residing there. The cheetah is the fastest known land animal, with the ability to run between 50-80 mph. Craig and Jeane saw a rhinoceros that was native to the area. The rhinoceros is an endangered species whose horn can be cut off with a chainsaw by poachers. The horn is sold and then gets grounded into a powder and sold on the illegal market. Another interesting stop was to a penguin’s colony south of Cape Town on the way back from the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of South Africa. This was the seaport that travelers coming and going to Asia would use to move their merchandise through by ship. One of the most famous names from South Africa was Nelson Mandela. Craig showed photos of where he was imprisoned.
One of the amazing things about this trip and others that they have made is that Craig and Jeane are their own travel agency. They make all their own airline, hotel, car rental, and side trip adventure reservations. They feel that removing the middle person (the Travel Agency) gives them more control over their experiences as well as added flexibility in planning. If you are planning a trip and have some questions on how to go about it, ask Craig as he may be able to help.
