President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

This week, the Perseid meteor shower lit up the night sky.

It’s a good reminder that we spend an awful lot of life looking down — at phones, calendars, problems and whatever demands our attention next.

Every once in a while, remember to look up.

The important moments in life can be just as fleeting: a conversation, an opportunity to help, time with someone we care about. If we aren’t paying attention, we can miss them.

Until next Wednesday, may something good happen because you were there.

- Ross

Collections Starting for Operation Warm 2026 - Opportunity to Buy Coats and Hoodies for Foster Kids

This is Denver/Lake Norman Rotary's eighth year working to provide a new winter coat for every child in foster care in Lincoln County. The club purchases coats that keep infants, children, teens and young adults (birth to 21 years) warm all winter. The recipients get to pick the color of the coat that they desire and their Social Worker provides the size for ordering and then, delivers the coat to the child.  Older children will receive hoodies since they much prefer them to actual coats.

The committee is headed up by Cathy Smiley and will raise money until the end of September so that orders can be placed with our various suppliers.

Please make checks out to the Denver/Lake Norman Rotary Club Foundation with "Operation Warm" on the memo line, so that your contribution can be tax deductible. Businesses, neighbors and friends are also welcomed and encouraged to donate.

Backpack Program to Help Hungry Kids

Our club did an amazing job providing over 2,200 school supply necessities to help local students start the school year well-equipped and ready to learn.
Unfortunately, many students also experience hunger and food shortages outside of school hours. The Backpack program identifies children in need and sends them home with food/meals to provide nutrition for evenings and weekends. These items should be shelf stable/ heat and eat. Individually packaged portions that will travel well once stuffed in a backpack are necessary (ie, no glass).

Please bring food by Wednesday 8/26 for our August service project. Once again, we will categorize and inventory all items collected. Remember to wear Rotary gear for group photo.

For more info, please contact Debbie Perry.

Andie let us know someone dropped 100 bucks in the CART bucket last week, so she challenged us to make that amount every week. She also said she and Jason are going to Montana, Ovando just so we know where she is… lest she goes missing…

Craig said to Andie “We will miss you!” and he agreed with Michelle morning hiking #1 and drinking #2 if we go to NC wine country this Spring. House is almost done - yea! Trip to Rock and Roll Hall of fame was fun, long drive through NY state, went to CT Rotary meeting - lots of old connections. His Dad and Mom were in a car accident met them in the ER, Father will be getting a pacemaker and Mom won’t be driving anymore. Welcome to visitor Beth - hope she is enjoying herself.

Barbara gave for 19th wedding anniversary celebrated by leaving the country.

Jim Minor gave for his Birthday on Monday and his grandson Logan will be attending College like Van this fall. He went to a filming of “The Beast of Cottonwood” let him know if you want to attend the opening of the movie Sept 19th.

Panico gave 4 dollars for Marty Smith, and for Trudie for working wine into all celebrations

Andy posted a video about the Food Truck event - please “like” or share it and help promote the club.

Marty Gilmartin was glad he could make it.
