President's Message

Hello my Rotarian friends!

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month in the world of Rotary International.  Our group does SO much good for both.  From providing books for the Race to Reading Program (founded on behalf of a beloved - but lost way too soon member - Andy Scriven), to our Kindergartner reading program - where a handful of our members go to Rock Springs and Lincoln Charter Schools once per month to share a book or two with these ready to expand minds.  (Side note - I did this for several years and not much melts a heart quite like the bright and smiling faces of five-six year olds loaded with questions and hugs!)  Thank you to those that are participating and if you are interested see our youth Services Chair, Terri.

All genres of music provide immense levels of education to the world and this Saturday (Sept 16th) we mark the end of the Denver/Lake Norman Rotary’s 2023 Season of Music in the Park.  We have had wonderful bands with interactive attendees at each event.  We have had great direction from the Denver Days/Music in the Park board (thank you ALL - and the response from the community has been impactful).  These events do so much to “Building Goodwill and Better Friendships” in our community so I hope to see you there!

Have  a great week and see you Wednesday morning.  If you need anything before that please do not hesitate to reach out.

Much love and kindness to each of you!

Andie

Editor's Note

The 2nd-to-last sentence in the 2nd paragraph of last week's President's Message should have read: "We owe it to the next generation to end hate and judgement."  Your humble correspondent sincerely apologizes for the omission.

Operation Warm 2023 is a Huge Success
In Denver/Lake Norman Rotary's fifth year working with Operation Warm to provide a new winter coat for every child in foster care in Lincoln County, the club has raised approximately $4,000. The club will be purchasing coats that keep infants, children, teens and young adults (birth to 21 years) warm all winter. The recipients get to pick the color of the coat that they desire and their Social Worker provides the size for ordering and then, delivers the coat to the child.  For 2023, 92 kids will receive coats with 42 older children receiving hoodies .

Cathy Smiley headed up this year's committee, with assistance from Charlie Bohlen, Norma Bohlen, and Sherry Reinhardt.  The committee raised money for approximately one month with this year's deadline in early September so that orders could be placed with our various suppliers.

Checks can still be made out to the Denver/Lake Norman Rotary Club Foundation with "Operation Warm" on the memo line, so that your contribution can be tax deductible.  Checks can be hand-delivered to any committee member or sent to Denver/Lake Norman Rotary, P.O. Box 861, Denver, NC 28037. Businesses, neighbors and friends are also welcomed and encouraged to donate.
