President's Message

Hello, Denver/Lake Norman Rotarians -

It’s March and you know what that means? No, I’m not talking about March Madness, or Easter, or Spring.  It is Women’s History Month and March 8th is International Women’s Day! The day has been celebrated since 1911 and was recognized by the United Nations for the first time in 1975. We have come a long way but there is so much more to strive for and, with true Rotary passion, Rotary Clubs worldwide celebrate our many accomplishments but also hold the tough conversations as to “what’s next”? Where can we support and uplift the women in our lives to believe in their abilities - not just as X (fill in the blank with a job title or role) but their abilities to make a difference in their communities.

Many women are breaking barriers in their careers - and yesterday on the court. HUGE Shout out to Caitlin Clark (University of Iowa) for her remarkable accomplishment of beating the 50 year record of college basketball player Pistol Pete (Maravich) for most points scored by a collegiate player! If you watched the game against Ohio State it was nothing short of mesmerizing!

There are so many women who do incredible things everyday with little to no recognition, and they do it graciously and courageously! I count myself so very fortunate to have had wonderful women role-models and mentors - many of those women are in Rotary (specifically our club!)  Thank you for being a beacon to those you encounter by sharing your wisdom  into the hearts of many with all of your encouragement! It is because of your kindness that fuels me to hopefully be a light to others.

All this said, I would love for ALL of us to join in on Rotary International’s 1 hour zoom presentation this Friday, March 8th at noon celebrating women.  (See the link below to register.)  The topic is Empowering and Elevating Women in the Workplace. I have already registered and I hope to “see” you there.

Denver/Lake Norman Rotary Exceeds Goal for District 7670 CART Campaign Ending 3/31

Denver/Lake Norman Rotary's CART Campaign has been highly successful so far.  President Andie Taylor and CART Chair Joe Lampron report that currently the total amount collected between http://mycartfund.org and the blue buckets is $3,288.91 and has exceeded our group's goal of $2,661.  Thank you!

Founded in 1995 by Roger Ackerman, a Rotarian in Sumter, SC, The CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) is a non-profit grassroots organization that provides “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research grants to help find a treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Roger passed away in 2018, yet to this day, we still adhere to our founder’s initial mission – that 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to research! Since 1999, 64 grants totaling more than $11 million have been awarded to 62 recognized research institutions in the United States.

The CART Fund is a 501(C)3 organization (Federal ID #31-1466051) governed by an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors composed of representatives from qualified Rotary districts that support the program. CART is chartered as a nonprofit organization under the laws of the state of South Carolina.

CART has been recognized as an “angel charity” by the SC Secretary of State for being “extremely effective at giving a high percentage of their total expenditures directly to programs for their designated cause, their compliance with the S.C. Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act, and their high use of volunteers in their fundraising efforts.”

While primarily supported by members of Rotary Clubs in the United States, CART has an active volunteer base and can accept donations of major gifts, bequests or volunteer efforts from anyone. A new donor recognition program was recently introduced, allowing “recurring donors” through the online system to be designated as members of the “Roger Ackerman Circle.” Click here: https://mycartfund.org/ to sign in with your DACdb user name and password.  To donate without using your DACdb credentials, click here: https://mycartfund.org/NewUser.cfm.
